This smartphone costs only $25, fit for our kind of market. or is it?

In a bid to have a smartphone in everyone’s hands, Mozilla and it’s partners have shown off an ultra low cost phones at this year’s Mobile World Congress in Bacelona. The company is deeply committed in creating an affordable smartphone at a $25 price point. The device is currently still a concept but it runs Mozilla’s mobile Firefox OS . On the spec sheet we are dealing with the following :

    • A 3.5-inch, 320 x 480 display (don’t expect it to be of good quality)
    • 2-megapixel camera,
    • 2G connectivity but NO 3G
    • Dual SIM support

With that 2G connectivity, they expect you to access YouTube, take pictures, and browse the web on it, not forgetting Firefox OS’s known responsiveness has been known to be so sluggish. Even if the phone is meant to be affordable especially in developing nations like ours, the sacrifice seems to be so much for you to go through this much pain. But at 25 dollars (UGX 60,000) and you are assured of not holding a dumb phone anymore.
