    This is how Uganda ranks in the cost of mobile internet worldwide

    We’ve always had the assumption that we pay a lot of money to Internet Service Providers (ISPs) in order to access all the content online. The latest data from GSMA indicates that the cost of mobile internet in Uganda is among the lowest worldwide and Africa.

    The GSMA estimates that 5 billion people around the world have mobile devices, and more than half of these devices are smartphones but the cost of mobile internet is still high. According to Pew Research Center, rates of smartphone ownership vary between countries, as well as within countries. Not surprisingly, affordability of mobile internet is one of the main factors that determines whether or not someone is able to go online.

    The detailed report indicates that the price of mobile internet around the world. The data used comes from from 230 countries and territories. The colors on the map correspond to the price of 1 GB of mobile internet in each country, with dark green being the cheapest at less than $1 and red being the most expensive at more than UGX 187k ($50) in the above map.

    Out of the 230 countries, Uganda is in the 101 position worldwide and 23rd in Africa in regards to the most cheapest mobile internet worldwide right behind Madagascar. Out of the 51 data plans measured, Uganda’s cheapest 1GB data package costs UGX 3.3k ($0.88) and can be as expensive as UGX 51k ($13.6). Rwanda, Congo, Kenya, Nigeria and Sudan take the top 5 spot respectively with their cheapest data ($0.04 to $ 0.29)

    In Africa, countries in the southernmost part of the continent pay the most for 1 GB of data. Zimbabwe pays the highest price both in Africa and in the world about UGX 280k ($75.20), and countries such as Equatorial Guinea UGX 245k ($65.83) and Saint Helena UGX 208k ($55.47) also pay more than UGX 187k $50. Conversely, Sudan ($0.68) and the Democratic-Republic of the Congo ($0.88) both pay less than $1 per GB.
