The Samsung Galaxy Quantum 2 is the A82 with inbuilt quantum cryptography

With the advent of cryptography technology, Samsung has announced the Galaxy Quantum 2 (A82) — its second phone that features built-in quantum cryptography technology that will provide increased security. It’s the follow-up to last year’s Galaxy A Quantum.

The Galaxy Quantum 2 has a chip developed by a company called ID Quantique, which says it’s the world’s smallest quantum random number generator (QRNG) at 2.5mm square. It works by capturing random noise with an LED and a CMOS image sensor. According to SK Telecom, the QRNG chip “allows smartphone holders to use services that require security in a more safe and secure manner by generating unpredictable and patternless true random numbers.”

For hackers, Quantum cryptography RNG is a nightmare for them as it is extremely challenging to hack without extensive physical access to a given device. The benefits for the Galaxy Quantum 2 will seem pretty niche to the average customer, but the QRNG chip does automatically work with apps that use the Android Keystore APIs, which should make the technology more accessible for developers.

Going back to the phone specs itself, the phone has some high-end flagship phone internals from a year or two ago. It has Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 855+ processor, which was announced in late 2018 and powered the best Android phones released in 2019. The rest of its specs, however, are quite impressive. You get a large 6.7-inch AMOLED display with a centered hole-punch cutout, QHD+ resolution, and the same 120Hz refresh rate as the Galaxy S21 series phones.

The Galaxy Quantum 2 is currently not ready for a Global release yet as it only confirmed for a release in South Korea by April 23rd.
