The most-viewed YouTube video is one you won’t expect

Gone are the days when Daddy Yankee’s “Despacito”, Psy’s “Gangnam Style” and Ed Sheeran’s “Shape of You” held onto the number one spot and held the crown of the most-viewed YouTube video.

A new kid’s video “Baby Shark” has now crossed 7.043 billion views mark — and this has officially made the kid-friendly, adult-terrorizing earworm the most-watched YouTube video ever. After 3 years of Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee’s “Despacito” took that crown it’s now time for a change as parents worldwide won’t be surprised with the new number one song.

“Baby Shark” is practically a core memory at this point even with your speakers muted, it will still resonate in our brains. What might surprise you is just how dramatically “Baby Shark” flew up the charts. Check out the less than the 2-minute video below to see if the hype is worth it.

As of April 2019 YouTube’s most popular videos only had 2.5 billion views and now have apparently shot up 181 percent since then. While “Despacito” has managed to stay ahead of “Baby Shark” all the way to 7.04 billion views, the same hasn’t been true of the record industry’s other hits during that same period:

    • (#3) Ed Sheeran’s “Shape of You” gained less than a billion views to 5.05B
    • (#4) Wiz Khalifa’s “See You Again” increased from 4 billion to 4.8B
    • (#7) “Uptown Funk” slightly increased from 3.5B to 3.99B
    • (#8) Psy’s “Gangnam Style” increased from 3.3B to 3.8B

This is all confirmed by Wikipedia graphic (shown below) and looks like “Baby Shark” hasn’t even come close to peaking yet:

The “Baby Shark” YouTube video seems to have a different growth trend than any of the big music video hits. That could be an interesting change of pace, considering how much the music industry has dominated the YouTube charts for the past ten years.
