Back in June, Multichoice, DStv’s owner announced plans of integrating Netflix and Amazon Prime Video to its Explora line of decoders and this has been realised with the new Dstv Explorer Ultra Decoder.
Besides what we’ve come to expect from Explora decoders, that is the PVR features, movie rentals from Box Office and DStv Catchup, the new Explora Ultra will also support internet connectivity via WiFi and integration with popular streaming services like Netflix and Amazon Prime.

“Our DStv Explora Ultra brings the best of two worlds together by introducing streaming apps, adding depth to the entertainment offering available. It also sees the addition of built-in Wi-Fi, making it easier to connect to the Internet,” Multichoice said.
The new DStv Explora Ultra decoder brings a unified home screen that will showcase not only DStv’s own offerings from its DTH service, Showmax, and Box Office but also content from select streaming apps.
4K Content Support
It should, however, be noted that the 4K content will come from third-party services than DStv own channels or services since the platform doesn’t produce content in the format.
It also remains unknown what operating system will power the new Explora decoder or even the pricing it will command but what is confirmed is —it will ship with a newer remote to allow quicker access to third-party streaming services.
These third-party services like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video subscriptions will be paid for separately. However, access to them via the Explora Ultra comes with an active DStv subscription. Their content is also going to become part of the Explora Ultra’s content showcase, that will allow viewers a single window to view everything from DStv owned channels and the likes of Netflix or Prime Video.
