Godfrey Mutabazi, the executive director of the agency has identified Global Mobile Telecommunications Network Limited and GMN Navigators as the companies that are illegally operating in the country. He warned that their activities pose a potential threat to the telecommunication networks in the country.

Mutabazi explained that Global Mobile Telecommunications Network Limited has continued to offer services to the public despite several warnings and closure previously. He added that the communications regulator has initiated legal proceedings against the companies but did not specify what exactly it has done.

Mutabazi also threatened to prosecute anyone using the SIM cards and calling cards belonging to the two telecommunication companies. He further advised members of the public who have acquired the products to return them and demand for refund.

In addition, Mutabazi asked other telecommunication operators in the country to report any interference on their networks, which they may attribute to the operation of the unlicensed companies.

It was not possible to trace the alleged companies. Uganda has many licensed telecommunication companies such as Airtel, Warid, MTN, Uganda Telecom, Orange and K2 among others.

The Uganda Communication Commission was established to monitor, inspect, licence, supervise, control and regulate communications
    services.
