Smile telecom’s woes are just getting started, after 20 days of silence since 2nd February 2022. The company has come out to apologize to the public and especially their customers in Uganda how have experienced slow internet speeds or had no access to Smile’s internet services. In a statement that techjaja has received, the company said;
“Smile Management would like to apologize to our customers, especially those affected. We want to assure you that we are committed to restoring our service as soon as possible. As a token of our sincere apology, we will refund data to all those Customers who had data prior to the downtime.”
“We will keep our customers informed and want to thank our customers for their patience and ongoing support. We look forward to serving you more efficiently in the future,” Smile Management added.
In 2018, Smile Uganda experienced connectivity outages for 3 days running in most locations across the country. According to a statement from the company, this was a result of a failure in resolving an outstanding financial dispute with some of their tower providers (TowerCo), who had opted to disable connectivity throughout the various base stations under their management especially in areas on Ntinda, Kiwatule, Bugolobi, etc.
At the time, Smile leadership engaged Towerco and with UCC being the mediator to resolve their issues amicably to avoid any further disruption of services. The company is however still tight-lipped in regards to the cause of the current network issues.
