Last week, we reported about Smile Communications experiencing massive network outages due to disputes with tower providers. However, full network has been restored after Smile Communications and Eaton Towers representatives held a meeting at UCC house.

Smile Communications service outage resulted from a failure in resolving a standing financial dispute with some of their tower providers. Consequently, the tower providers opted to disable connectivity throughout the various base stations in areas such as Ntinda, Kiwatule, Bugolobi, etc.

Smile Communications is one of Uganda’s longest serving 4G LTE Internet Service Providers. This year, they introduced offers like Snack bundle and SmileChakala Bundles to add to their succulent arsenal.

The network outage came at a time when the company had announced that it would pay social media tax for its customers for the next 3 months. Surely, the black out caused some unhappy faces on smile customers.

The company resorted to amicable engagement with the tower provider the to resolve this issue and avoid any further disruption of services.

Smile has been linked to closure but it has continued in business nonetheless. Before Vodafone finally closed Ugandan operations, it first experienced network outages. Smart Uganda has suffered the same network problems.

UCC confrims Smile Communications meeting with tower provider

UCC said that the two held an arbitration meeting and resolved administrative issues that recently affected the delivery of communication services to Smile customers.

The tower provider, during the arbitration meeting agreed to reconnect all Smile sites. This was to the benefit of all stakeholders concerned. The commission reports that re-connection happened even before the meeting ended.
The parties to the arbitration agreed to sign a temporary addendum to allow re-connection and service restoration. However, conclusion of the ongoing negotiations for a new service provisioning agreement remains pending.
Smile Communications undertook to settle outstanding obligations. It also requested withdrawal of the statutory notice issued by Eaton Towers. This position will allow Smile to resume service to its customers as they await conclusion of the main agreement.
“Thanks to the parties involved for reaching an amicable solution that serves all concerned. UCC remains committed to investigate and arbitrate matters relating to communication services and taking action to drive the development of a robust communications sector in Uganda.” UCC said in a tweet.
