Following the removal of the Over-The-Top (OTT) tax, the government of Uganda introduced a new 12% Excise Duty on internet data effective 1st July 2021, Smile Communications Uganda has today come out to announce that they will not be increasing data bundle fees.

In an email to its clients the telecom firm said; “We are pleased to inform you, our valued customer, that we will pay the new 12% tax at no cost to you (subject to future review), and the current pricing of data bundles will not change. We hope that this will enable you and your loved ones to stay online.”
The company made it clear that they took this decision to help their clients survive the covid-19 pandemic, especially in this lockdown. They felt that by absorbing this new tax, it will enable their customers to connect with friends and family and conveniently work from home. And this will also support children with online studies, deliver daily tasks online, and enjoy your favourite entertainment without limitation.
MTN Uganda remains the telecom company that has not adjusted its data bundle fees, leaving Roke Telkom and Lycamobile the only telecoms that have made some increments.
