Smart Telecom is back in business

The Telecom regulator, the Uganda Communications Commission has finally withdrawn the notice that saw Smart Telecom’s Operating licenses revoked. After several protracted negotiations that occurred on Wednesday and Thursday this week between the two parties, the regulator has finally reinstated the Mobile Network Operator’s (MNO) licenses. On 14th December, UCC issued an advertisement/notice in the New Vision, revoking licenses of three Internet Service Providers; including One Solutions, Forris and Smart Telecom/ Suretelecom.

In a letter this blog has managed to obtain (see full letter below), UCC acknowledged that Smart Telecom has now fulfilled all its license requirements (PSP and PIP) and has no further reason for revoking it. Among the reasons for closure of the struggling telecom company, induced non-payment of annual spectrum charges that all carriers remit to the regulator, which Smart Telecom had apparently defaulted on.

Now that Smart telecom is back in business, whats do you think the they need to do to survive Uganda’s tough Telecommunication sector? Leave us a comment below.
