MultiChoice is consolidating its streaming services in East Africa. Starting this month, eligible Showmax subscribers in Uganda will receive free trial access to DStv Stream Compact until the end of May 2026, as the company prepares to discontinue the standalone Showmax platform on 30 April 2026.

The move marks the end of Showmax as an independent app and integrates its popular Showmax Originals, along with a deeper on-demand library, into the unified DStv Stream platform. Users will now access live TV, extensive sports coverage via SuperSport, international series and movies, kids’ content, and award-winning local dramas—all in one place.
After the free trial period (ending 31 May 2026), qualifying Showmax subscribers who do not currently have an active DStv subscription can continue with DStv Stream Compact at a heavily discounted rate of UGX 20,000 per month for 12 months, provided they maintain an active subscription and payments remain up to date. This represents a saving of up to 75% off the standard pricing, which starts at UGX 110,000 per month on a 12-month plan or UGX 120,000 month-to-month.
DStv Stream offers a richer experience than the original Showmax app, including features such as Watch From Start, offline downloads, and data management tools. The service supports mobile devices and smart TVs, making it convenient for on-the-go and home viewing.“Our priority is to ensure customers continue to have a home for the stories they love,” a DStv spokesperson said. “By bringing thousands of hours of Showmax Originals and a broader on-demand catalogue into DStv Stream, we’re creating a more holistic entertainment experience where live sport, news, international blockbusters, and local award-winning drama coexist.”Existing DStv Compact, Compact Plus, and Premium customers will automatically gain access to Showmax content on DStv Stream at no extra cost. Pure Showmax subscribers (those without a DStv package) will receive details of the offer via email linked to their Showmax account.
Important notes for users:
- Showmax subscriptions will not migrate automatically. Users must follow the simple sign-up process for DStv Stream (shared via email) and create a new profile — a process that takes less than five minutes.
- Customers who prefer not to switch can request a refund for any unused portion of their Showmax subscription, subject to standard terms.
- Automatic payments for Showmax will stop once the service is discontinued on 30 April 2026.
This consolidation reflects MultiChoice’s broader strategy to streamline its streaming offerings under the stronger DStv Stream brand, following years of challenges for the standalone Showmax service.
