The Ugandan police has started rolling out the second phase of CCTV camera installation across the country. This follows the first phase of the installed cameras that has helped the security institutions in Kampala Metropolitan area fight crime. The 2nd phase will cover most municipalities and major towns.
The police has identified up to two thousand three hundred and nineteen (2,319) places where 80 number plates and 20 facial recognition cameras will be installed and connected to 107 monitoring centers at different police stations.
The installation of this second phase comes after completing the installation in Kampala Metropolitan area and opening up the National Command Centre at Police Headquarters in Naguru, the police embarked on assessing hot spot areas where CCTV cameras are badly needed.
Police has revealed that the CCTV cameras will also be installed at the border areas of Busia, Nimule, Malaba and Katuna. There is no word on when this phase will be completed.
