A few years back we reported about Roke Telekom entering the the triple play space after their Chief Operating Officer (COO), James Byaruhanga throwing hints about it. It turns out they were not mere hints but actually a product on it’s way and what better way to offer triple play services than Fiber to the home?
For those not in the know, triple play means offering a trio of services that is voice, data and TV over a single connection pipe and in most cases this happens over fiber networks. Now let’s connect the dots, Fiber-To-The-Home (FTTH) is normally augmented by triple play services offering both three choices via a single pipe.
Whereas Roke Telkom is teasing about FTTH coming soon, it’s safe to expect not only data but also voice and TV though we haven’t seen them play in the latter two but this doesn’t take away the possibility of it happening Mr James in the earlier report expounded on how they were in talks with the likes of DSTV & Startimes about content distribution over the rumored fiber to the home service.
It would be similar to what Zuku Fiber did a while ago though these ones have been reluctant on letting the world know about what they can offer, coupled with a limited footprint of only being found in the affluent neighborhoods of Naguru, Kololo and Bukoto.
We hope once Roke Telkom launches its FTTH, it could be as affordable but also widely available even in the burgeoning neighborhood and not self impose themselves in a few areas but for now the roll out will start in Bugolobi.
As always, competition is good and the like of Zuku Fiber just got one. Roke Telkom isn’t specific on when their fiber to the home service will launch but the most likely time frame is not later than 2018.
