It is always a sad time whenever one loses a relative or close friend, and the circumstances that follow the loss are always a challenge to those that relied heavily on the deceased. However, if the person in question was a bread winner to a family or a regular provider via mobile money, there is a possibility of accessing the funds off their mobile wallet.
The various mobile money service providers in Uganda have steps to follow when retrieving this money from the dead persons account. But the procedure to follow is close to the same as summarized below.
Precisely, you need to be a next of kin or benefactor of the deceased and there must be proof to this. You need to contact the local authorities for the death certificate, a letter of administration confirming you as the go-to person on matters of the deceased, and a valid national ID to identify you as related to the deceased.
Also, you can not claim money that did not exist on a mobile wallet. So, you need to be sure that the deceased in question really had a balance on their account at the time of death and this has not been withdrawn.
Here is how to retrieve the money on various telecom service providers.
MTN Mobile Money & Airtel Money
Here, the next of kin is required to process Letters of Administration from the authorities to confirm the responsibility, and thereafter take them to an MTN service centre or Airtel service centre respectively with a valid national ID to claim the money. The company will follow up on the way forward.
