The Quantum School of Computing, Artificial Intelligence, and Robotics in Uganda recently launched, in a bid to drive innovation and equip Ugandans with the skills needed to thrive in a rapidly evolving digital world. The school’s vision extends far beyond classrooms and labs—it aims to use technology as a tool for societal transformation.
Alongside its academic mission, the Quantum School has unveiled two groundbreaking initiatives: Sky-Harvest Uganda, which seeks to revolutionize agriculture through AI and blockchain, and the Her Code Her Future Foundation, a program dedicated to addressing gender disparity in Uganda’s ICT workforce. Together, these initiatives represent a powerful commitment to leveraging technology for progress, equality, and sustainability.
Sky-Harvest Uganda: Revolutionizing Agriculture with Technology
At the heart of this initiative is Sky-Harvest Uganda, which aims to modernize agriculture through cutting-edge technologies such as AI and blockchain. By leveraging NASA’s satellite data, this program provides farmers with real-time insights into essential agricultural factors like rainfall patterns, soil health, temperature fluctuations, and pest activity. This data-driven approach enables farmers to make informed decisions, ultimately leading to increased yields and optimized resource usage.
One of the standout features of Sky-Harvest is its integration of blockchain technology. This ensures transparency and traceability throughout the agricultural value chain. By utilizing smart contracts, transactions between farmers and buyers are streamlined, making it easier for rural farmers to access credit, insurance, and broader markets. This financial inclusion is crucial for empowering local farmers and enhancing their resilience against climate change.
As Prof. Robert Steven Owor, Executive Director at the Center for Innovation and Emerging Technologies, aptly stated, “At the Quantum School, we believe in the power of technology to solve societal challenges.” Sky-Harvest Uganda exemplifies this belief by harnessing technology to address pressing agricultural issues.
Her Code Her Future Foundation: Bridging the Gender Gap in ICT
In parallel with Sky-Harvest Uganda, the Her Code Her Future Foundation seeks to address the gender disparity in Uganda’s ICT workforce, where women currently represent only 18% of the sector. This initiative is dedicated to equipping women and girls with essential skills in technology, ensuring they have a seat at the table in shaping technological advancements.
Ethel Mwebaza, spokesperson for the foundation, passionately articulated its mission: “Our work today is not just about technology—it’s about creating opportunities, changing lives, and shaping the future.” The foundation aims to provide immersive AI education that empowers young women to excel in an increasingly digital world.
Mwebaza emphasized that AI skills are no longer a luxury but a necessity for future job markets. Through initiatives like Her Code Her Future, there is a concerted effort to ensure that communities—especially women—are not left behind as industries evolve.
A Commitment to Investment and Growth
The ambitious scope of these initiatives is backed by a substantial investment of $30 million (UGX 110.6 billion) aimed at bringing these projects to fruition. This financial commitment reflects a broader recognition of the potential that technology holds for societal progress in Uganda.
As these programs unfold, they promise not only to enhance agricultural productivity but also to create a more inclusive tech environment where women can thrive. With continued collaboration between educational institutions, government bodies, and private sectors, Uganda stands on the brink of a tech-driven revolution that could redefine its economic landscape.
