How to use Picture-in-Picture mode via WhatsApp web on your desktop

WhatsApp has of late been adding a series of new features to its platform in a bid to improve user experience. Not so long ago, the platform introduced picture-in-picture (PIP) feature for iOS and Android users.

The feature, arguably on a high demand, has been passed on to WhatsApp Web as well. The addition implies you can watch Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube videos on your desktop as you continue to scroll through WhatsApp chats simultaneously.

Reports indicate that the update is rolling out in phases for desktop users globally with the latest version 0.3.1846. So, you won’t have to manually install this new update. Once it is available, the picture-in-picture (PIP) mode update will be added automatically.

To check if the update has reached you, go to Whatsapp Web > Setting > Help. If the version is older, you should try clearing the browser cache.

How to use picture-in-picture (PIP) feature for WhatsApp Web

The primary requirement is for you to use the mode is to have your WhatsApp Web updated to version 0.3.1846. Once the update is installed, navigate to any WhatsApp chat in which you have received a third-party video link.

This can be a media link from YouTube, Instagram, Facebook and Tumblr. There will be a video card with a blurred thumbnail image along with the platform logo.

When you tap on the link the video will be played on the top half of the WhatsApp chat window. There will also be an option to watch the video in full-screen mode.

You can use the timeline bar to pan backward or forward, and even watch the playback on mute. When you exit WhatsApp Web, the video will stop playing.

Note that the browser version of WhatsApp web doesn’t currently support the new feature, so you might have to wait a while before it becomes functional.
