What’s new about Apple’s iPad Air and iPad mini?

Apple has put the veil off the latest iPad lineup, featuring a new set of iPad Air and iPad mini. The company’s first upgrade to the iPad mini since 2015 will see the new models offer keyboard support and work with the Apple Pencil.

The new models now have support for the Apple Pencil, and the company CEO Tim Cook tweeted an image showing him scribbling on an iPad using the Pencil.

    iPad Air specifications

The new iPad Air comes with a 10.5-inch “ultra-thin design” that boasts of a larger and more vibrant Retina display. If you are familiar with the previous iPad models, you can relate it with the 2015 iPad Pro model.

The Air will feature an A12 chip, an upgrade from the previous-generation iPad Pro that featured an A10X, and the new device will also work with a Smart Keyboard.

    iPad mini specifications

Apple says the 7.9-inch iPad mini comes with Apple’s fastest A12 Bionic chip and can only afford the highest pixel density you can ever see on any iPad.

The advanced Retina display with True Tone technology and wide color support is 25 percent brighter and has the highest pixel density of any iPad, delivering an immersive visual experience in any setting.

In what looks like a downgrade, the iPad mini still features a Touch ID fingerprint sensor, a Lightning port and a headphone jack – elements that the iPad Pro ditched for good.

Both iPad models have a camera boost on each, improving their low-light performance as well as advanced sensors for augmented reality experiences. They are as well designed to work faster and longer with enhanced performance and longer battery life.

    Price

The new iPad Air will cost $499 coming with 64GB of storage, or more for 256GB of storage and cellular connectivity. The Mini will cost $399 for 64GB storage, or more for 256GB of storage and cellular connectivity.

Apple has set the starter price of the Pencil to $99 in the US. The Smart Keyboard for the 10.5-inch iPad Air will go for $159 with layouts for over 30 languages.

Apple is expected to host an event on March 25 where it’s expected to announce a video streaming service.
