Netflix is testing game streaming for TVs, PCs, and Macs

Netflix, the streaming giant, is testing game streaming on select devices, smart TVs, and desktop browsers. At least, the company is determined to redefine the boundaries of gaming and entertainment.

Mike Verdu, Netflix’s Vice President of Games, expressed the company’s vision in a recent blog post. “Our goal has always been to have a game for everyone,” he wrote. “We are working diligently to meet our members where they are, aiming to provide an accessible, smooth, and ubiquitous service.”

This statement comes as Netflix takes its first steps towards making games playable across a wide range of devices.

For now, the testing phase is limited. Only two games, Oxenfree and another yet to be identified, are available to a select group of Netflix subscribers in the UK and Canada.

These games can be accessed on devices such as Amazon Fire TV streaming media players, Chromecast with Google TV, LG TVs, NVIDIA Shield TV, Roku devices and TVs, Samsung smart TVs, and Walmart ONN. However, Netflix plans to expand support to more devices in the future.

But that’s not all. Another source reveals that Netflix is extending its gaming horizon to Macs and PCs. A limited group of Netflix users in specific regions can now access two test games, including Oxenfree and Molehew’s Mining Adventure, directly from Netflix.com using supported browsers.

These games can be played using standard keyboard and mouse controls. Furthermore, for TV gaming, Netflix has introduced the Netflix Game Controller app, available for both iPhones and Android devices.

Since 2021, Netflix has been offering mobile games, with over 50 titles now available. However, until now, these games were restricted to smartphones and tablets. The inclusion of games in the Netflix membership without any additional fees or in-app purchases makes it an attractive proposition for subscribers.

As the beta testing progresses, Netflix aims to refine its game streaming technology and controller, striving to enhance the user experience.

By expanding its gaming offerings to a broader range of devices, Netflix hopes to make gaming even more accessible to its global subscriber base. This move could potentially position Netflix as a formidable competitor to platforms like Apple Arcade.
