One standout example of this evolution is My Doctor, a digital healthcare services platform that is leveraging telemedicine to democratize healthcare access, particularly for underserved communities.

My Doctor’s innovative approach is featured on Day 9 of the 40 Days 40 FinTechs initiative, Season 5, highlighting its role in advancing healthcare accessibility through technology.

Located in Nansana Municipality, Wakiso District, My Doctor operates a physical health center while simultaneously offering telemedicine services. This dual approach allows them to cater to a broader audience, ensuring that individuals can access healthcare services through various channels, including phone calls, social media, text, audio, and video consultations.

Dr. David Mwesigwa, the Medical in-charge of My Doctor, emphasizes the importance of adapting to technological advancements in healthcare.

He states, “The traditional health system is not failing. It continues to work. However, we are in a technology era, and as healthcare service providers, we can’t be left behind.”

    The impact of Telemedicine

Telemedicine has been warmly received in the community served by My Doctor. Many clients, including those who previously preferred traditional healthcare methods, are now embracing this modern approach due to its convenience and cost-effectiveness.

Dr. Mwesigwa notes that telemedicine is particularly beneficial for mild ailments that can be diagnosed remotely. For instance, tests such as HIV can be conducted in the comfort of a patient’s home, with laboratory personnel dispatched to collect samples and deliver results promptly.

The integration of digital payments into My Doctor’s telemedicine services further enhances the patient experience, allowing clients to pay conveniently through mobile money, bank transactions, or cash.

The demand for My Doctor’s telemedicine services has seen remarkable growth. In 2023, over 4,600 customers utilized the platform, and in the first half of 2024 alone, approximately 4,200 individuals sought telemedicine consultations. This rapid uptake indicates a strong belief in the efficacy of telemedicine, particularly among women, who make up a significant portion of the clientele.

As the healthcare landscape continues to evolve, My Doctor is well-positioned to lead the charge in providing equitable healthcare services to those at the bottom of the pyramid.
