MTN Uganda set to roll out smart water meters

In a bold move to revolutionize water management, MTN Uganda is gearing up to introduce smart water meters across the country, promising households and businesses unprecedented control over their water usage. Ibrahim Senyonga, General Manager of MTN Uganda’s Enterprise Business Unit, emphasized the game-changing potential: “Smart water meters give Ugandans the tools to see exactly how their water is being used or wasted. This transparency not only helps families save money but also supports broader efforts to reduce water loss in our communities.”

The initiative tackles a persistent challenge in Uganda: non-revenue water (NRW), losses from leaks, theft, or inefficiencies that strain utilities and inflate costs for consumers. Smart meters address this head-on with real-time monitoring and automated data collection, enabling utilities to quickly detect leaks or unauthorized usage. For consumers, the technology offers clarity to make informed choices, conserve water, and avoid surprise bills.

MTN Uganda showcased this transformative technology at the 22nd African Water and Sanitation Association (AfWASA) International Congress and Exhibition, held at Speke Resort, Munyonyo. The event, which brought together policymakers and innovators from across Africa, highlighted sustainable solutions for the continent’s water challenges. As a sponsor and participant, MTN Uganda reinforced its role as a digital pioneer, leveraging technology to address societal needs.

This smart metering project aligns with MTN’s broader mission to drive digital transformation in Uganda’s essential sectors. As a key partner to the government, the telecom giant is committed to enhancing public services, boosting efficiency, and fostering economic growth. The initiative’s pilot phase will serve as a testing ground, refining the technology for wider rollout in Uganda and potentially beyond.

Looking ahead, MTN Uganda sees smart metering extending to other utilities like electricity and gas, leveraging its robust digital infrastructure to build smarter, more sustainable communities. By collaborating with government bodies and utility providers, the company aims to set a new standard for resource management in the region.

MTN’s involvement in events like AfWASA underscores its commitment to using innovation to tackle Africa’s pressing challenges. With water as a critical resource, smart meters mark a significant step toward sustainable management, empowering Ugandans and paving the way for a more efficient, economically vibrant future.
