The award recognizes the duo’s remarkable efforts in developing flexible green site solutions, a crucial initiative amid South Africa’s persistent power challenges. The innovative solution integrates green and intelligent technologies, orchestrating end-to-end site reconstruction with a focus on power supply, distribution, load, and intelligent operations and maintenance (O&M).

With features like anti-theft reconstruction and smart power consumption, this solution proves highly adaptable to power outages and weak grids, ensuring over 98% energy availability at sites. Huawei’s advanced OWS+NetEco intelligent O&M platform, utilizing artificial intelligence for solar, mains, and diesel power supply, further enhances efficiency.

The success in South Africa has prompted plans for a wider rollout in Zimbabwe, Botswana, Namibia, and Kenya, addressing power shortages in these regions. Notably, this partnership has propelled MTN closer to its net-zero goals, marking a significant stride in sustainable operations.

Zoltan Miklos, General Manager of Access and Architecture at MTN South Africa, highlighted the collaboration, stating, “As a leading operator in South Africa, MTN SA aims to keep the connected connected, enabling all the benefits of a modern connected life to everyone. Huawei, as the strategic partner, provides in-depth site insights based on its powerful R&D innovation, product supply capabilities, and professional local service team.”

Diego Dong, South Africa Delivery and Service Business at Huawei, emphasized the urgency of resilient and intelligent networks in the face of South Africa’s load shedding crisis. “Having a resilient and intelligent network has urgently become the consensus for all operators and customers,” Dong said.

“Huawei and SA MTN are actively working together on Green ICT innovation to build intelligent, green, and simplified sites, ensuring a highly reliable network and the best user experience.”

This collaboration aligns with AfricaCom’s mission to bring together industry decision-makers, government departments, carriers, investors, and industry analysts to discuss the latest trends in the communications industry. The award-winning solution exemplifies the power of innovation in addressing critical challenges and propelling the telecom industry towards a sustainable future.
