MTN Rwanda fined by the country’s telecom regulator. Here is why

The Rwanda Utilities Regulatory Authority (RURA)has fined MTN Rwanda seventy billion thirty million (7,030,000,00) Rwandan Francs about USD 8.5 million over non-compliance of its license obligations and has since issued a letter announcing the penalty.

The letter accuses MTN Rwanda of implementing its IT managed services under the MTN Hub outside Rwanda which was in breach of directives set by the RURA. The letter also says that MTN proceeded with the move despite warnings that such actions would lead to a penalty over breach of license obligations.

By doing so, it called for the regulator to act and on 4th May 2017, the RURA board had a hearing meeting in which MTN Rwanda admitted to the misconduct thus the administrative fine.
