The two giant telecom companies have worked together to introduce this measure to reduce the risk of COVID-19 transmission by the physical exchange of currency notes. This has been done in recognition of the extended lockdown since the zero charges that the two companies announced expire today.

All Mobile money and Airtel transactions between customers and merchants will continue to attract zero transaction charges for the next 30 days.

On March 18th, 2020, MTN Uganda in consultation with the Central bank and some of their escrow partner banks partnered to wave some mobile money transaction fees in order to minimize the likelihood of transmitting the coronavirus. Handling of physical cash is one of the ways the virus spreads thus the company is encouraging people to go cashless and use mobile money in its new move to scrap fees off some transactions.
