    Mobile money services quietly switched back on

    Perhaps the only service that had no “VPN alternative” during the social media blackout was the popular mobile money service that was blocked by the government citing security concerns during the just concluded 2-day election exercise.

    Savvy users were able to by-pass UCC’s blocking of Facebook, WhatsApp and Twitter using VPNs, however,  mobile money services remained blocked which left many businesses who rely on the service counting losses.

    As of this evening, users on social media have reported that MTN Mobile Money and Airtel Money services have been restored but its also been reported that subscribers cannot perform functions like money withdraw, while others can not make transactions beyond a certain threshold on MTN mobile money.

    About 8 million mobile subscribers who rely on mobile money couldn’t transact due to this service termination, and as of the time of publishing this post, there is no official communication from UCC or even the telecoms as regards the official service restoration of the mobile money platforms from the different service providers.
