As we still wait for telecom companies in Uganda to roll out 5G, we are currently stuck with two options in order to enjoy fast Internet speeds. Nevertheless, we do wonder whether there are any readers out there who even tinker with their connectivity settings to switch from 3G to 4G and vice versa on their phones.

4G is supposed to be better than 3G at least when it comes to speed and latency, but this is not always the case. There are a couple of reasons why you might want to disable 4G in the first place. For one, the first wave of 4G phones reportedly consumed a lot more power than 3G. For over 10 years now power consumption has improved with the latest phones though, featuring more efficient integrated modems and improved tech in general.
Another reason why you might want to disable your 4G LTE connectivity is that you’re simply satisfied with 3G. Today some 3G networks still deliver solid speeds for web browsing, HD video streaming, music streaming, and other apps. You might not have 4G networks in your area either, so what’s the point of your phone searching for a signal that isn’t there?
Of course, there are a couple of reasons to keep 4G enabled too. The speed boost is the most obvious upside to keeping it switched on as it offers a huge leap over LTE. Then there’s the fact that 4G is more resilient when it comes to congestion, so you might experience fewer dropped connections. In some cases, however, we have seen some networks whose’s 3G service is better optimized than their 4G LTE.
Do you leave 4G on all the time in favor of 3G, do you turn it off now and again, or do you permanently disable it? Let us know via the poll below.
