Here’s the Meta AI tool that will watermark AI-generated content

Meta AI has developed a groundbreaking system called AudioSeal, designed to embed hidden signals, known as watermarks, in AI-generated audio clips. This innovative technique aims to combat the growing issue of misinformation and scams using voice cloning tools by enabling the detection of AI-generated content online.

    How AudioSeal Works

AudioSeal employs a unique generator-detector architecture that jointly trains two neural networks. The generator creates watermark signals that are embedded into the input audio, while the detector returns the probability of the watermark’s presence.

This approach allows for localized watermark detection, enabling the identification of specific segments of AI-generated speech within a larger audio clip.

    Advantages and Challenges

AudioSeal offers several significant advantages over existing watermarking methods. It achieves state-of-the-art performance in terms of robustness to real-life audio manipulations and imperceptibility, making it ideal for large-scale and real-time applications. Additionally, the system’s fast, single-pass detector significantly surpasses existing models in speed, detecting watermarks up to two orders of magnitude faster.

However, there are some caveats to consider. Meta has no plans to apply the watermarks to AI-generated audio created using its tools, and the adoption of audio watermarks is not yet widespread. Furthermore, watermarks for AI-generated content are vulnerable to tampering, such as removal or forgery.

    Potential Impact

The potential impact of AudioSeal is substantial. It could help social media companies detect and remove unwanted content, such as deepfakes, and prevent the spread of misinformation. The tool could also be used to verify the authenticity of audio recordings, ensuring that they are not manipulated or fabricated.

    Availability and Future Development

AudioSeal is available on GitHub for free, allowing anyone to download and use it to add watermarks to AI-generated audio clips. The researchers who developed the system plan to present their work at the International Conference on Machine Learning in Vienna, Austria, in July.

The tool could eventually be overlaid on top of AI audio generation models, making it automatically applied to any speech generated using them
