With many companies dishing out foldable phones from their R&D labs, a foldable iPhone from Apple seems to be the next logical step for the company. Apple always takes its time when it comes to adopting new technologies, but this new form factor may not be far away.
According to popular analyst Ming-Chi Kuo: Apple could be looking at a 2023 launch for the foldable iPhone, and they are still experimenting with screens between 7.5 and 8 inches. Previous rumors have indicated that the screen would be smaller, closer to the size of an iPhone 12 Pro Max.
Mr. Kuo says that the product has “not yet officially kicked off.” Meanwhile, we have seen the likes of Samsung, Motorola, and Huawei unveiling multiple foldable phones (though they’re mostly pricey for early adopters and the infancy of the technology being used contributes to the high prices).
According to Kuo, the foldable iPhone’s screen will be iPad Mini-sized when folded out, so it seems as if Apple is going for the Galaxy Fold approach of having a regular-sized phone that folds out into a small tablet, rather than the Galaxy Z Flip or Razr approach of having a compact folding phone. It’s unclear who would be making those folding displays — there have been rumors of Apple working with both LG and Samsung. Check out the video below of a tech pundit who has already come up with his own version of the iPhone that folds.
There is no doubt that the foldable iPhone is in the works, but it’s not something to wait around for just yet. It should also be noted that Kuo’s 2023 launch date is dependent on Apple being able to figure out “key technology and mass production issues.” Will it have a crease? Will it have iPhone 12 Pro Max quality cameras? How will iOS adapt to the upcoming foldable iPhone new form factor. We shall wait to see what happens in time.
