It’s that time of the year when we get to know where we stand as a nation when it comes to internet speeds. The latest annual Worldwide Broadband Speed League report is out by Cable.co.uk and has this time ranked Uganda 146th which is seven positions better from last year’s 152nd position in the world in average national broadband speed. Speeds in Uganda average at about 8.5 Mbps according to this report.
This position puts Uganda ahead of countries like Egypt, Rwanda, and Tunisia in Africa. The detailed report looks at more than 557 million broadband speed tests worldwide, revealing the ranking of 221 countries and territories when it comes to average national network speeds.
After the analysis is done, the resulting information is collected by M-Lab, an open-source project with contributors from civil society organizations, educational institutions, and private sector companies.
British Crown Dependency Jersey is the country with the fastest internet with over 274 Mbps mean download speeds overtaking Liechtenstein which was number one last year. A connection this fast means it would take you just under three minutes to download a 5GB movie. The USA comes in at number 14 with 92 Mbps.
If you are an internet freak and love to stay connected to fast speeds, you will have to avoid Ethiopia, Yemen, and Turkmenistan. The trio comes in last with a mean download speed of just 0.78Mbps.
