Gone are the days when big brands like LG, Samsung or Sony would sale a DVD player alone, now you have a full DVD Home Theater system sold as package complete with Speakers, Woofer, DVD-player, Amplifier, etc. But this comes with a set of complications when it comes to maintenance and troubleshooting issues.
They are mainly installed in home sitting rooms and offices for music, FM Radio, photos and video with USB support. This means DVD Home Theater systems have to support various file formats and this solely depends on the manufacturer. The most common formats supported include:
- Music: MP3,MWA,WMA,AC3
- Photos: jpg
- Video: avi, mpg, mpeg
DVD Home Theater systems come in all shapes and sizes with several speakers that can offer varying sound levels to ensure it fills the room with great sound. You can get a wired or Bluetooth wireless connection between these speakers. But those using Bluetooth speakers should note that the sound may be interrupted when the connection interfered by the other electronic devices in the house like microwaves, smartphones, etc.
Troubleshooting tips
1. In case the DVD Home Theater system unit does not work properly. Try turning off the power of this unit and the connected external device (TV, Woofer, DVD-player, Amplifier, etc.) and turn it on again. Disconnect the power cord of this unit and the connected external device (TV, Woofer, DVD-player, Amplifier, etc.) and then try connecting again.
2. In case of no power, Plug the power cord into the wall outlet securely.
3. When you see on picture on the screen, select the appropriate video input mode on the TV so the picture from the unit appears on the TV screen. Also, connect the video cables securely to both the TV and unit.
4. When there is there is little or no sound: Select the correct input mode of the DVD Home Theater systems so you can hear the sound from the unit. Connect the audio cables into the connection terminals correctly and if all fails, replace with a new audio cable.
5. If The DVD picture quality is poor: It is advisable to clean the disc using a soft cloth with outward strokes.
6. A DVD/CD will not play: Check the following, Is the disc inserted? if not please insert, Insert a playable disc (disc should be able to support the formats mentioned above). Ensure you have placed the disc with the label or printed side facing upwards. Finally try entering your password or change the rating level for DVD Home Theater systems that have parental control.
7. Humming noise heard while a DVD or CD is playing: This is common is many DVD players but more common in cheaper models as manufacturers use affordable components that can be interfered with by external sources easily. As a solution, try moving the DVD Home Theater systems unit and audio components further away from your TV. Also clean the disc using a soft cloth with outward strokes.
8. The remote control doesn’t work well or at all: The remote may not pointed directly at the unit so try to point the remote directly at the DVD Home Theater systems unit. The remote may be too far from the unit, so always try to use the remote within 7 meters of the unit. Ensure that there is an obstacle in the path between the remote control and
the unit so remove the obstacle. Finally check the battery in the remote control to ensure they are not flat. Replace the batteries regularly with new ones.

Maintenance tips for your DVD Home Theater system
When moving the Unit
It is advisable to save the original shipping carton and packing materials. If you need to shift homes, for maximum protection of the DVD Home Theater system, re-pack the unit as it was originally packed at the factory in case you are moving.
Keeping the exterior surfaces clean
- Avoid using volatile liquids such as insecticide spray near the DVD Home Theater system unit.
- Wiping with strong pressure may damage the surface so always take care.
- Avoid leaving rubber or plastic products in contact with the unit for a long period of time.
Cleaning the DVD Home Theater system
To clean the player, use a soft, dry cloth. If the surfaces are extremely dirty, use a soft cloth lightly moistened with a mild detergent solution. Do not use strong solvents such as alcohol, benzine, or thinner, as these might damage the surface of the unit.
Notes on Discs
Do not touch the playback side of the disc. Hold the disc by the edges so that fingerprints do not get on the surface. Never stick paper or tape on the disc.
After playing, store the disc in its case. Do not expose the disc to direct sunlight or sources of heat and never leave it in a parked car exposed to direct sunlight.
Fingerprints and dust on the disc can cause poor picture quality and sound distortion. Before playing, clean the disc with a clean cloth. Wipe the disc from the center to out. Do not use strong solvents such as alcohol, benzine, thinner, commercially available cleaners,
or anti-static spray intended for older vinyl records.
