Airtel has gone in deep into Video on Demand (VoD) with its latest Airtel TV offering. The service is only available for Airtel Uganda customers and promises to offer unlimited access to Live TV and other video content from around the world. But how does it work? Lets get started.
The launch comes a few days after MTN launched its partnership with YoTV Channels to avail affordable data bundles for streaming local content. But unlike MTN, Airtel has partnered with local content providers and other big shot studios to have content onto their Airtel TV platform.
The Channels
Airtel customers are able to watch Ugandan, Nigerian and Indian movies from Ugawood, Nollywood, and Bollywood respectively. There is also an assortment of Ugandan based TV stations and other global channels like Trace (Urban, Mziki, Africa, Mziki, Gospel, Tropical Sports Stars), Al Jazeera, Nautical, Bloomberg, GodTV, Gametoon, Fashion Box and Inspiration TV among others.
How to Use Airtel TV
- Get yourself an Airtel Uganda SIM and subscribe for the service, if you are an exsting customer all you need is to activate any data bundle.
- Download the Airtel TV App from Play store for Android or iOS for iPhone.
- Open your Airtel TV app and enter your Airtel number to register. You will sent an SMS requesting you to activate the account. This SMS process will validate that you are an Airtel subscriber.
- When registration is completed, you will be directed to the home page which has mainly popular movies and TV shows.
- You are good to do now, you can now stream and watch all channels available on the app. Just make sure you manage your data bundle and data usage.
- The app has a tab for TV shows, another for movies, and one for Live TV. Navigate through to access the content of your preference.

It should be noted that since this is a local app, its is not VPN friendly so you find yourself using WiFi or having to pay for OTT in case that’s how you use VPNs to avoid paying the tax. Some of the content like USA based Hollywood movies will give you an error of ” This is not available for Uganda”. But, this is mainly due to due to copyright restrictions. The movie catalog on the Airtel TV app is still lacking and its a miracle to find any Ugandan movies as of writing this article.
Don’t expect to be able to take a screenshot while watching a show, I guess Airtel TV was inspired by the Netflix app. We therefore, not able to get you screenshots of some aspects of the app. But on a brighter note, when watching Live TV, the app will indicate the program currently being aired. This comes in handy when you want to have a quick glance of what is on air in that particular point in time. Airtel TV has a long way to go but its great for the start.
