Optical Fiber has been used to carry network signals for a number of decades now, but has failed to break into the dugout as a prominent solution due to high cost of setting up the infrastructure despite being a faster and more reliable technology than the usual copper wire we use.
It’s close to seven years now since Google rolled out Project link in Kampala, an initiative aimed to provide local Internet service providers (ISPs) and mobile operators access to reliable and high-speed fiber infrastructure in Africa’s urban cities which gave birth to C-Squared.
CSquared in Uganda!
Google through CSquared has built more than 800 km of fiber in the cities of Kampala and Entebbe and nearly 1,000 kilometers of fiber in the Ghanaian cities of Accra, Kumasi and Tema. They operate on a wholesale model where they lease out their infrastructure to domestic network operators to use and deliver high-speed fiber internet to people’s homes. Since its re-brand last year its has been able to have companies like Roke telecom, iWay Africa and Gilat telecoms as clients that are using their infrastructure in Uganda.
How to get connected?
CSquared allows an individual as well property owners to order and use the home fiber directly to their houses/homes/apartments to deliver the internet communication.
There are two ways you can get the product; either by expressing your interest through their website or contact preferred service provider and checkout if they are partners with C-Squared to help lay down the service for your home.
CSquared has currently rolled out their services in selected parts of Kampala, here is a list of areas with the Fiber to home services.
