Anyone who sends New Year’s greetings via WhatsApp at the turn of the year knows that this sometimes only works with a delay. In many countries people have been quarantined and some working from home due to the coronavirus. WhatsApp is definitely a great time waster and so to avoid this, the company has to find away to ensure its servers don’t crash. In some countries, however, the status function is now restricted to relieve the messenger – as WABetaInfo reports

“ANNOUNCEMENT: You can no longer send videos to WhatsApp Status if they are longer than 16 seconds: only videos having a duration of 15 seconds will be allowed. This is happening in India and it’s probably an initiative to reduce the traffic on the server infrastructures.”

From this message, its clear that WhatsApp has cut the video length of its status feature by 50% in some countries around the world. While you could record 30 seconds so far, it is now 15 seconds. This should bring a significant relief, without the function having to be completely eliminated.

Countries that use WhatsApp in the hundreds of millions take for example India that has over 400 million users, the status function is very popular and is now being used extensively. It should be noted that this is only a temporary restriction that will be removed when the situation calms down. However, it could also be extended to other countries if necessary.
