    Here is how UCC has contributed to the COVID-19 response

    The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) yesterday contributed an assortment of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to the national COVID-19 response effort.

    The items worth UGX. 60,000,000, is directed towards the provision of protective gear for medical staff at the frontline in the fight against COVID-19.

    The items, which include 5,000 masks, 10,000 gloves and 252 coveralls, were handed over to the Minister of Health Dr Jane Ruth Aceng by the Acting Executive Director Irene Kaggwa Sewankambo accompanied by Mr Fred Otunnu the Director Corporate Affairs at the Ministry of Health headquarters on Thursday.

    Eng. Kaggwa Sewankambo described the UCC gesture as an expression of solidarity with the frontline medical staff who are putting their lives on the line every day to fight the pandemic.

    “In line with His Excellency the President’s call for support, UCC has identified PPEs as a critical area requiring our intervention, through which we hope to send a message to our frontline health teams that we care,” she said.

    His Excellency President Yoweri Museveni recently called on individuals and companies to complement the Government’s efforts in the fight against COVID-19 by contributing financial and other resources.

    UCC has spearheaded the implementation of interventions related to the communications sector, especially those falling within its regulatory purview such as ensuring connectivity and dissemination of accurate, timely and authentic information about COVID-19.

    Eng. Kaggwa Sewankambo applauded the various players in the communications sector for the various interventions towards the fight against COVID-19. “Broadcasters are supporting the information dissemination and communication of accurate, timely and authentic information to the populace while Telecoms are supporting with SMS and caller tunes to sensitise subscribers, providing connectivity to enable Working from Home, social networking and facilitating the COVID-19 emergency call centre and enabling electronic transactions which are facilitating Electronic commerce,” she said.
