    Checkmarks are coming to Gmail (too)

    Google is introducing a new checkmarks feature in Gmail to help users identify legitimate emails from impersonators. This feature, called BIMI, is an extension of the Brand Indicators for Message Identification feature that was introduced in 2021.

    BIMI requires senders to use strong authentication and verify their brand logo in order to display a brand logo as an avatar in emails. Now, users will also see a checkmark icon for senders that have adopted BIMI, indicating that the email is legitimate.

    Email authentication is important for identifying and stopping spam, as well as increasing confidence in email sources. BIMI creates a better email ecosystem for everyone by giving readers an immersive experience. It is available to all Google Workspace customers, as well as legacy G Suite Basic and Business customers starting May 3rd, and to users with personal Google Accounts.

    Gmail is not the only platform that uses checkmarks to signify verified and authentic accounts. Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook all use checkmarks to indicate that an account is authentic.

    On Twitter, the checkmark appears next to the username of the account. On Instagram and Facebook, the checkmark appears next to the name of the account. These checkmarks are intended to prevent impersonators from creating fake accounts and using them to spread false information or engage in other malicious activities.

    Twitter was one of the first platforms to introduce checkmarks for verified accounts. The feature was introduced in 2009, and it was initially intended for public figures and celebrities. However, it was later expanded to include other users, such as journalists and activists.

    The most recent update, as you might have already known by now, is that the legacy checkmarks were put out of service and getting verified checkmarks on Twitter requires a subscription – done monthly or yearly.

    Instagram and Facebook also use checkmarks to indicate that an account is authentic. Instagram introduced the feature in 2014, and it is available to users who are considered to be public figures or celebrities. Facebook introduced the feature in 2015, and it is available to users who are in certain categories, such as government officials, celebrities, and brands.

    The use of checkmarks to signify verified and authentic accounts has become more common in recent years. This is due in part to the rise of social media and the increasing importance of online reputation management. It is also a response to the growing problem of impersonation on social media platforms.

    Impersonation can be used to spread false information, engage in harassment, or steal personal information. By using checkmarks to indicate that an account is authentic, platforms can help prevent impersonation and increase trust among users.
