    Facebook penetrates Africa and Asia with over 100 million users

    Facebook has announced in it’s newsroom that a new milestone in its mission to capture emerging markets with over 100 million people using the Phone app, which runs on around 3,000 feature phone models worldwide has been reached. The Java app is optimised for low data consumption while offering many of the features found on smartphones, and some carriers in Africa and countries such as , India, the Philippines, and Indonesia offer free or discounted data with packages like m.facebook for its users.

    It’s no secret that Facebook has not made much money from its operations in developing countries just yet. According to the The New York Times the social giant has only recently begun selling ads to Facebook for Every Phone user, and emerging markets are not expected to make up a major portion of revenue anytime soon.
