End of an Era: Godfrey Mutabazi fired as UCC Executive Director

After a 10 year tenure, Godfrey Mutabazi the Executive Director of the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) has been relinquished from his position where he has been at the helm since 2010. UCC is the communication regulatory authority for all broadcasting, postal and telecommunications services in Uganda.

Information reaching our desk indicates that Mutabazi has been replaced by Engineer Irene Kaggwa Ssewankambo according to a communication memo issues by the new Minister of ICT, Judith Nabakooba. In her letter, Minister Nabakooba directs that Irene Kaggwa serves in acting capacity until the Dorothy Okello-led governing Board conducts recruitment and a substantive CEO is recruited to replace Eng Mutabazi who has productively and transformatively headed UCC for such a long time.

Its still unclear how Mutabazi’s fate was sealed, but he has been seen as the presidents’s blue eyed boy in all matters concerning communication. As he has vast experience in both broadcasting and telecommunications and away from ICT; he is a champion for equal opportunities and gender balance.
