Coronavirus is causing a lot of panic and nervousness across many domains. After raving havoc in China and parts of Europe, some of the African countries have started reporting their few first cases. Uganda is no exception during this trying times and according to the president’s directives, enforced a 30-day lockdown to minimize the spread of the deadly virus.
In a bid to further reduce the movement of physical cash, especially in this coronavirus times, telecom companies are encouraging their customers to go cashless and use mobile money. MTN Uganda was the first to waiver transaction charges for Peer to peer (P2P) MTN to MTN transaction.
Roke Telkom followed pursuit by launching a new campaign to help businesses, Edu centres and individuals stay connected to education, communications and productivity applications and services at no extra cost. Applications like Google Classrooms, Google Hangouts, Office 365, Teams, Trello, Skype and Zoom have been zero-rated to support and ensure that business is still conducted and students can still access learning tools and classes online.

Airtel Uganda today announced through the communications channel they’re offering their customers the same perk but with additional benefits. Airtel Uganda is offering its users free transactions on its mobile money platform, Airtel Money until 19th April 2020. Unlike MTN’s offer which only applies to transactions below UGX 30,000, Airtel’s covers all bands.
Quick reminder, mobile money transaction fees across networks still stand and customers will have to pay these charges. Additionally, mobile money withdrawals charges are still intact.
Coronavirus is spreading fast and many governments, both at the National and County level, are aggressively sensitizing citizens through various platforms on ways to keep themselves safe from the virus. Keep safe by following the doctor’s directives. Quarantine, disinfect, drink a lot of water and wash your hands frequently with soap.
