How to add the free VPN in Cloudfare’s 1.1.1.1 app to your mobile

Last year, about this time, Cloudfare launched its 1.1.1.1 public DNS service with an ultimate objective of offering a fast, yet private way for desktop users to browse the Internet. Not so long later, the service was extended onto mobile devices with the company releasing apps for Android and iOS to turn the service on and off with just a tap.

The company is now adding a VPN known as Warp to the mobile apps for mobile devices, a feature designed to give users more privacy while browsing the internet on their phone.

While the 1.1.1.1 DNS service keeps away service providers from tracking your browser history, it doesn’t encrypt your internet traffic. The free VPN is designed to cover up the gap.

What Warp does is to encrypt your connection to the available servers while reducing your data use, by caching and compressing the content you access as necessitated. Cloudfare says the VPN will also mask all internet traffic on your phone, even on the other apps you use.

Cloudflare promises never to sell your browsing data, use targeted advertising or ask for any personally identifiable information such as your name or email address in order to sign-up.

The VPN will operate on a ‘freemium model’, allowing customers to upgrade to Warp+ for faster performance at a “low monthly fee.”

Though the announcement was made about the free VPN, Cloudfare is ‘not yet ready’ to deliver it to everyone. However, you can place your name on a waitlist in the app and be in the queue to get it.

If you already have the 1.1.1.1 App on your phone, you just need to update it through the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store. If you don’t yet have the 1.1.1.1 App you can download it after which you’ll see an option to claim your place in line for Warp.

When the delivery starts, your position in line will move up and once your turn to get the VPN comes up, Cloudfare will send you a notification and you’ll be able to enable it.
