ChatGPT now has an Advanced Voice Mode. Here’s what we know

OpenAI, the company behind the popular AI chatbot ChatGPT, has unveiled a new feature – the Advanced Voice Mode. This technology aims to take conversational AI to new heights, offering users a more natural and engaging interaction experience.

Advanced Voice Mode is designed to enhance the existing voice capabilities of ChatGPT, allowing for real-time, conversational interactions that mimic human-to-human dialogue.

Unlike traditional digital assistants, this mode can respond to interruptions, recognize emotional cues, and adapt its responses based on the user’s tone and context. The feature aims to create a more engaging and lifelike interaction, similar to conversing with a human friend.

To use Advanced Voice Mode, users select the voice icon within the ChatGPT app. The mode allows for audio inputs and outputs without converting speech to text, resulting in lower latency and more fluid conversations. Users can mute or unmute their microphone and switch back to standard voice mode at any time. However, the mode currently does not support memory or custom instructions, meaning it cannot recall past interactions or user preferences.

The rollout of Advanced Voice Mode is currently limited to a select group of ChatGPT Plus subscribers. OpenAI plans to gradually expand access to all Plus subscribers by fall 2024. Users who are granted access will receive an email with instructions on how to use the feature.

Originally slated for release in June 2024, the launch was postponed to ensure safety and effectiveness. The feature is now in a limited alpha phase, with broader access expected in the coming months.

Advanced Voice Mode features four preset voices created with professional voice actors. OpenAI has implemented safeguards to prevent the AI from mimicking specific individuals, including public figures, and blocks requests for generating music or copyrighted audio.

Users will encounter daily limits on the amount of time they can use the voice feature. Once the limit is reached, the conversation will end, and users will be prompted to switch to standard voice mode.

The mode is designed to be used in quieter environments, and using headphones is recommended to minimize interruptions. OpenAI has also provided tips for optimizing the experience, such as enabling voice isolation features on compatible devices.

OpenAI states that it has conducted extensive testing with over 100 external testers to ensure the voice mode’s reliability and safety. The company has also integrated guardrails to prevent harmful or illegal content from being generated.
