Customers of Barclays Bank Uganda need not panic, as their much loved bank is now called Absa Bank Uganda. The change in name will with effect from November 11th 2019, and will come with a brand new logo, slogan and huge change in color scheme. This process has rather been a protracted process that began way back in 2018 after Absa Bank Uganda officially announced the rebrand.
In May last year, Barclays Africa Group Ltd shareholders approved that the group changes its name to Absa Group Limited. This move has been seen as one of the largest re-brand projects on the continent, with the company adopting a complete new redesign.
When you walk by what used to be a Barclays Bank ATM or bank branch it is most likely that it has been changed and given a facelift. It should be noted that Barclays bank will still enjoy all the products and services they had and nothing will changed after the Absa bank rebrand.
The rebranding has not happened in Uganda only as Barclays is in the process of rebranding banks in other African countries like Botswana, Ghana, Kenya, Mauritius, Mozambique, Seychelles, Tanzania and Zambia.
Barclays is no longer part of the Absa brand, and will only remain as a partner in the group, and still has a 14.9% shareholding in the company. Absa was registered by South Africa’s Companies and Intellectual Property Commission; and the name change took effect on 11 July 2018, with the group’s share code on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) changing from BGA to ABG.
