Apple has today taken the veil off its Netflix competition TV streaming service called Apple TV +. The service will cost UGX 18k ($4.99) per month in over 100 countries at launch including Uganda. This is much lower than the rumored UGX 34k ($9.99) that was reported earlier.
The $4.99 is for a family subscription and Apple CEO said at the launch event “All of these incredible shows for the price of a single movie rental — that is crazy!” In comparison Neflix costs up to $10 per month. So its clear Apple wants to drop into the TV streaming service as a low price competitor to get more subscribers.
As a huge surprise Apple announced that all New iPhones, iPad, Apple TV purchases will come with one year of new the streaming service for free. Flexing that ecosystem!
Apple also showed of the long awaited trailer of See its upcoming huge series starring Jason Momoa (think Aqua Man) about a world where everyone is blind. One of the kids who can see is reading 1984 in a future that looks an awful lot like Game of Thrones.
The streaming service will be available on the Apple TV app for $4.99 (US) per month with a seven-day free trial starting November 1 on iPhone, iPad, Apple TV 4K, Apple TV HD, Apple TV (3rd generation), iPod touch and Mac. To subscribe to the streaming service , customers must update to iOS 12.3 or later, tvOS 12.3 or later and macOS Catalina. The subscription will automatically renew at UGX 18k ($4.99 ) per month at the end of the seven-day free trial.
The streaming service will also be available on the TV app on select 2018, 2019 and newer Samsung smart TVs, and on Amazon Fire TV, LG, Roku, Sony and VIZIO platforms in the future.
Customers with AirPlay 2-enabled Samsung, LG and VIZIO smart TVs must update to iOS 12.3 or later or macOS Catalina to play or mirror Apple TV+ originals from the Apple TV app on iPhone, iPad, iPod touch or Mac directly to their smart TVs. Customers with eligible Sony smart TVs will be able to enjoy AirPlay 2 support later this year.
Up to six family members can share one new streaming service subscription and watch using their own Apple ID and password. Only one one-year offer is available per family, regardless of the number of devices purchased.
Apple has reportedly spent $6 billion in original content spending, a massive increase from its initial $1 billion pledge two years ago, pales in comparison to the more than $14 billion Netflix is expected to spend this year and the nearly $24 billion Disney is expected to shell out for streaming and theatrical releases.
Apple TV Plus is coming November 1st for first shows. Will you get your self a subscription?
