Apple unveils a standalone Passwords app

Apple is set to introduce a dedicated Passwords app in iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia, providing users with a centralized and streamlined solution for managing their login credentials across Apple’s ecosystem.

The new app will replace the existing iCloud Keychain, which was previously accessible only through the Settings menu, making it more convenient for users to access and manage their passwords.

The Passwords app will consolidate various types of credentials, including website logins, Wi-Fi passwords, and Passkeys, an Apple-promoted password replacement that utilizes Face ID or Touch ID for authentication.

Users will be able to filter and sort their accounts based on criteria such as recently created accounts, credential type, or membership in shared groups.

One of the key features of the Passwords app is its ability to auto-fill login information into websites and apps when a user goes to sign in. This functionality aims to encourage users to adopt stronger, unique passwords and discourage the repetition of passwords across multiple websites and services.

The Passwords app will be powered by iCloud Keychain, Apple’s existing password management system, which syncs passwords and usernames across devices. However, the dedicated app will offer a more user-friendly interface and additional features compared to the current iCloud Keychain implementation.

Another notable aspect of the Passwords app is its compatibility with Windows devices via the iCloud for Windows app. This cross-platform support will extend the app’s utility to users who operate across different ecosystems, making it easier to manage credentials on various devices.

The developer beta versions of iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia are currently available, providing an early look at the Passwords app. The public release of these operating systems is scheduled for the fall of 2024, coinciding with the launch of new iPhones.

Apple’s introduction of the Passwords app is a significant step in enhancing its built-in password management capabilities. By offering a dedicated app, Apple aims to provide a more intuitive and user-friendly solution for managing login credentials, while also encouraging the adoption of stronger security practices.

The Passwords app will face competition from established third-party password managers like 1Password, LastPass, and Proton. However, Apple’s integration of the app across its platforms and its ability to import passwords from other providers may make it an attractive option for users already invested in the Apple ecosystem.
