    How Does Yaka Mangu Work?

The program simplifies the connection process for potential customers. Here’s a breakdown of the key points:

    • Eligibility: Yaka Mangu caters to domestic and small commercial property owners seeking a new electricity connection within UMEME’s distribution footprint across Uganda.
    • Reduced Fees: The Ugandan government significantly subsidizes the connection fees. Applicants are only responsible for two charges:
      • Inspection Fees: A fixed fee of UGX 41,300 (Ugandan Shillings) covers the inspection costs associated with establishing the connection.
      • Yaka Units: A one-time payment for the yaka units (prepaid meters) that come with the connection. The cost of these units varies depending on the chosen meter capacity, typically ranging around UGX 15,000.
    • Connection Types: The program caters to two main connection scenarios:
      • No-Pole Connection: This option is ideal for properties located within 35 meters of an existing electricity pole. As no new pole installation is required, the connection process is generally faster and more cost-effective.
      • One-Pole Connection: For properties situated further than 35 meters from an existing pole, a new pole might be required. While this option incurs additional costs associated with pole installation, Yaka Mangu still significantly reduces the overall connection expense compared to traditional methods.

    Benefits of the service:

The Yaka Mangu program offers a multitude of advantages for Ugandans, including:

    • Increased Electricity Access: By minimizing the upfront connection costs, Yaka Mangu empowers more Ugandans to connect to the national grid. This improved access to electricity unlocks a range of benefits for homes and businesses.
    • Enhanced Quality of Life: Electricity provides access to essential appliances like refrigerators, lighting, and mobile phone chargers, significantly improving living standards. Additionally, businesses can utilize electricity for equipment and lighting, fostering economic growth and productivity.
    • Simplified Application Process: Yaka Mangu streamlines the connection process, making it easier and faster for individuals and businesses to secure electricity access.
    • Economic Development: Wider electricity access stimulates economic activity by empowering businesses to operate more efficiently and fostering the creation of new ventures that rely on electricity.

    • Sketch Map: A basic sketch of your property, indicating its location and proximity to existing power lines or poles, is required.
    • Way Leaves (if applicable): In instances where the connection requires the power line to pass through a neighbor’s property, written permission (way leave) from the neighbor is necessary.
