All about Edits app, the CapCut competition from Instagram

Meta, through its Instagram platform, has unveiled Edits, a new video editing app designed to rival ByteDance’s CapCut. The announcement comes at a pivotal moment, coinciding with the temporary ban of TikTok and its associated apps, including CapCut, in the United States.

This strategic launch positions Meta to fill the void left by CapCut and provide creators with an advanced editing solution. Here’s everything we know about Edits, from its features and launch details to its potential impact on the competitive landscape of video editing apps.

Why Edits? The Context Behind the Launch

The timing of Edits’ announcement is no coincidence. On January 19, 2025, TikTok and its affiliated apps, including CapCut, were removed from U.S. app stores due to federal legislation targeting ByteDance. Although TikTok was temporarily restored following political negotiations, CapCut remains unavailable, creating an opportunity for competitors like Meta to step in.

Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, emphasized that Edits is designed for creators who are passionate about making videos on their phones.

He stated on Threads: “There’s a lot going on right now, but no matter what happens, it’s our job to provide the best possible tools for creators.” This sentiment reflects Meta’s ongoing strategy to capitalize on gaps in the market caused by geopolitical tensions and regulatory actions.

    What Makes Edits Stand Out?

At its core, Edits offers a unique approach to creative organization. The app features a dedicated Inspiration Tab, designed to help users discover trends and ideas, fueling their creative process from the outset. Complementing this is a separate tab for tracking early concepts and drafts, ensuring that no brilliant idea gets lost in the shuffle.

When it comes to video recording, Edits takes things to the next level. The app boasts a significantly upgraded camera capable of capturing high-quality clips up to 10 minutes long. This is further enhanced by advanced settings for resolution, frame rate, dynamic range, and zoom controls, giving creators unprecedented control over their raw footage.

The editing capabilities of Edits are where the app truly shines. It offers single-frame precision editing, allowing for meticulous adjustments. Green screen capabilities and video overlays open up a world of creative possibilities, while AI-powered animations breathe life into static images. The app doesn’t stop there – it provides a rich variety of fonts, filters, stickers, sound effects, and voice effects, enabling creators to add their unique touch to every video.

Collaboration is at the heart of Edits’ design philosophy. The app allows users to share drafts with friends or collaborators, fostering a creative ecosystem where feedback and iteration are seamlessly integrated into the editing process.

Integration with Instagram is another standout feature of Edits. Users can directly export their creations to Instagram Reels in crisp 1080p resolution. But it’s not just about posting – Edits provides detailed performance insights via a live dashboard, including metrics like follower engagement and skip rates, empowering creators to refine their content strategy based on real-time data.

Audio enhancements round out the Edits experience. The app includes tools to enhance voice clarity and remove background noise, ensuring that the audio quality matches the visual polish. Additionally, an automatic caption generation feature with customizable styles makes content more accessible and engaging for all viewers.

    Availability and rollout

Edits is currently available for pre-order on the iOS App Store and is expected to launch on March 13, 2025. An Android version is also in the works but will follow at a later date. Meta has been testing the app with select creators to refine its features before the public release.

Edits vs. CapCut: How do they compare?

While both apps cater to mobile video creators, there are notable differences that set them apart:

While CapCut has been a favorite among TikTok users due to its simplicity and integration with ByteDance’s ecosystem, Edits aims to attract more professional creators by offering advanced features and deeper integration with Instagram’s analytics tools.

    Meta’s strategic play

Meta has a history of leveraging market disruptions to introduce competitive products. In 2020, following TikTok’s ban in India, Meta launched Instagram Reels as an alternative. Similarly, Threads was introduced in 2023 as a rival to X (formerly Twitter). The launch of Edits follows this pattern of seizing opportunities created by regulatory or market shifts.

The temporary absence of CapCut has created a vacuum in the U.S. video editing app market. Even if CapCut returns soon, the uncertainty surrounding ByteDance’s apps could drive creators toward more stable alternatives like Edits. Additionally, Meta stands to benefit financially; analysts predict billions in ad revenue could shift from TikTok to platforms like Instagram if ByteDance’s challenges persist.

What does this mean for creators?

For content creators, Edits represents an exciting new tool that combines professional-grade editing capabilities with seamless social media integration. By focusing on mobile-first workflows and offering robust analytics for Instagram Reels, Edits could become a go-to app for influencers and brands looking to optimize their content strategy.

However, as a newer app compared to CapCut, Edits may face initial challenges such as bugs or missing features. Creators will need time to evaluate whether it can truly replace or surpass CapCut as their preferred editing tool.
