Airtel Uganda video conferencing meeting gets Zoombomed

Online drama occurred today during an Airtel Uganda video conferencing talk in regards to the company’s contribution to ICT sector since ICT’s have been at the helm of development in Uganda. The online video meeting was also broadcasted live on the company’s Facebook Live and Airtel TV at 11 am earlier today.

The call was hosted by the company’s Chief IT Officer, James Museba, and Chief Technology Officer, Rajesh Agrawal. The call was “zoombomed” by an unknown person who hijacked the screen with abusive images and vulgar scribblings.

Zoombombing is the offensive and troubling drop-ins to Zoom calls by strangers who have had access to the zoom caller ID and most of these drop-ins have been offensive during a ready serious call causing a lot of distractions during the video call. They’ve especially caused problems with so many schools worldwide turning to it as the best video conferencing app solution for teachers to keep in contact with students.

The call was ended prematurely for a few minutes to allow the technical teams to resolve the problem.

Zoom’s 5.0 update released at the end of April took some major strides in this regard, but the service still has ways to go to clear up every concern. The May 9th update enabled a number of features to help free account users combat Zoombombing and, even more, surprising given the aforementioned feature freeze, the service is adding a new transcription tool, according to TechRadar.

During the call, Airtel CTO revealed that the company has invested over US$800 million in our network the infrastructure of our network to ensure reliability at affordable rates. He also unveiled that as part of Airtel’s contribution, they have eased daily tasks of their subscribers by partnering with different service providers to offer their services such as banking, food ordering, school fees, and bills payments among others through Airtel Money.

Airtel reaffirmed it’s network leadership position in Uganda with the announcement of 2,000 network masts across the country. They have to deliver different opportunities in the fields of entertainment, entrepreneurship, manufacturing, and education.
