Airtel Money now supports Tax Payments following MTN Momo’s Lead

In a significant step toward modernizing financial services in Uganda, Airtel Money has partnered with the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) to enable seamless tax and fee payments via mobile phones. Launched on August 12, 2025, this collaboration allows Ugandans to pay taxes, renew passports, secure business licenses, and settle other URA obligations directly through the MyAirtel app or by dialing *185*7#. The move eliminates the need for long queues, paperwork, and time-consuming trips, making civic duties more accessible and efficient.

This development follows in the footsteps of MTN Mobile Money, which has been offering similar tax and fee payment services since 2012. MTN’s early adoption of mobile-based URA payments set a precedent for digital financial inclusion in Uganda, enabling millions to handle obligations like Pay As You Earn (PAYE), Value Added Tax (VAT), customs duties, and licensing fees with ease. Airtel Money’s entry into this space intensifies competition and expands options for Ugandans, leveraging Airtel’s robust digital infrastructure to enhance convenience.

“At Airtel Money, we walk the talk,” said Japhet Aritho, Airtel Money Managing Director, at the launch event. “As of December 2024, Airtel Money contributed UGX 133.4 billion in taxes. We understand the role of tax in driving Uganda’s development, and we’re committed to simplifying the process for every citizen.” The service allows users to select payment types, enter details, and complete transactions in minutes, whether for personal taxes, university fees, or business licenses.

The URA, under the leadership of Assistant Commissioner James Odong, praised the partnership as a milestone in financial inclusion and public service delivery. “This collaboration aligns with our mission to mobilize national development transparently and efficiently,” Odong stated. “By leveraging Airtel’s network, we’re ensuring taxpayers can meet their obligations conveniently, fostering socio-economic growth.”

Airtel’s initiative builds on the foundation laid by MTN Mobile Money, which has processed billions in transactions over the past decade, proving the scalability of mobile payment systems. Both platforms now play a critical role in Uganda’s digital transformation, supporting entrepreneurs, students, and everyday citizens in contributing to nation-building without leaving their homes or offices. As Airtel Money scales its service, Uganda’s journey toward a cashless, tech-driven economy gains momentum, with mobile money platforms leading the charge.
