As part of the agreement, SpaceX has secured operating licenses in 9 of Airtel Africa’s 14 operational countries, with licensing processes ongoing for the remaining 5. This partnership will enhance Airtel Africa’s next-generation satellite connectivity offerings, providing reliable and affordable voice and data services to enterprises, businesses, and socio-economic communities, such as schools and health centers, in even the most remote parts of Africa.
The collaboration will also explore innovative solutions like rural coverage expansion through cellular backhauling, utilizing Airtel’s robust ground network to extend connectivity. Both companies are committed to identifying additional opportunities to promote digital inclusion, with SpaceX poised to benefit from Airtel’s established infrastructure and regional expertise.
Sunil Taldar, Airtel Africa’s MD and CEO, highlighted the partnership’s transformative potential: “We remain deeply committed to enriching the lives of people across Africa. This partnership with SpaceX is a significant step toward advancing Africa’s digital economy, ensuring reliable and affordable connectivity in the most remote and underserved regions.”
Chad Gibbs, SpaceX’s Vice President of Starlink Business Operations, expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration: “We are excited to work with Airtel to bring Starlink’s transformative benefits to African communities in innovative ways. Airtel’s pivotal role in Africa’s telecom landscape makes them an ideal partner to complement our direct offerings and expand Starlink’s reach.”
Starlink is already operational in over 20 African markets, and this partnership underscores SpaceX’s strategy to collaborate with industry leaders to maximize its impact. Notably, on April 29, 2025, Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni described a “productive meeting” with Starlink representatives, signaling the company’s efforts to establish a presence in the East African nation (Reuters, April 29, 2025). While it remains unclear whether Starlink has secured a license in Uganda, these discussions reflect the company’s growing momentum across the continent.
By combining Airtel’s regional expertise with Starlink’s satellite technology, this partnership sets the stage for a more connected Africa, driving digital transformation and unlocking new opportunities for millions in rural and underserved communities. As licensing efforts progress and the collaboration deepens, the initiative promises to reshape Africa’s digital landscape.
