How to access Facebook and Twitter on your feature phone in Uganda

2018 was a wild year, especially for telecoms and internet service providers (ISPs) in Uganda. It started out as a promising year for internet users, drastically dropping the rates at which one would access mobile data plans.

Mid year, what seemed like a table-talk joke turned out to be a reality when the infamous OTT tax was imposed on social media usage, with a pay-to-access prompt put forward by almost all ISPs.

It was a blow to the numerous citizens that can’t stand missing out on the daily feeds on their various platforms. For those that could afford to pay, they did. For those that could afford to resist, they as well did.

Then came a lot – that could do neither, but rather to quit and move on. These are the minority that probably did not own a smartphone by then, and have not bought one till now.

The 2018 Jumia report indicated that 19 million Ugandans have access to the internet, and these access it via various platforms. Among these is feature phones – an advanced section of these, which can reliably relay web pages.

It is obvious that the OTT tax affected these most, literally because, if you can not afford to pay the tax, how will you install a VPN on your feature phone?

But there is an alternative, a much cheaper alternative to the VPN. Let’s check it out.

How to access Facebook on your feature phone in Uganda

First of all, your phone should be able to access the internet without fail. A number of Tecno feature phones have Opera pre-installed, something that offers a high advantage in this.

Next, you should have a data bundle running on your SIM card. I have not seen a feature phone that taps Wi-Fi, so this is a requirement as well.

Once you have these two in check, visit a proxy to unblock the Facebook site. There are a number of free proxies out there that can assist in this, but we’d recommend you to try Online Proxy.

When you visit the site, it will ask you to enter the web address you want to unblock, with available options of Facebook, Twitter, Google, and YouTube.

Enter for Facebook, or alternatively select the Facebook button, and log in there after. You will notice how easy that will be, without worrying about anything else.
