Uganda is yet again going to see the launch of a new telecom operator in the country even before we get over Vodafone’s exit. The new telecom is none other than LycaMobile, a UK based Mobile Virtual Network (MVNO) that is said to be vying for a market left behind by Vodafone.
LycaMobile will operate as a Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) much like Vodafone did with its voice services. Basically what this means is LycaMobile will lease wireless frequencies from established operators for its own network to ride on, much like what K2 and Smart Telecom are doing currently.
Who is LycaMobile
LycaMobile is a Mobile Virtual Network Operator currently headquartered in London, the United Kingdom. It is part of the Lyca Group which has operations in over 23 countries.
The telecom is known for selling prepaid mobile services to customers wanting to make international telephone calls, on top of employing an aggressive pricing strategy on entry of countries where it sets up operations.
Much as it is headquartered in the UK, it’s actually first set up shop in the Netherlands and as of 2016, it had over 15 Million subscribers.
Which Mobile Operator is LycaMobile Partnering with?
LycaMobile is rumoured to be partnering with Tangerine to launch its operations in Uganda in order to leverage the latters experience in the market. Tangerine itself is known for its aggressive data pricing strategy and enjoys a clientele that expands beyond Kampala to Wakiso and areas of Mukono.
LycaMobile is also said to launch with 2G for voice and 4G for data services and is currently hiring with many engineering jobs up for grabs.
