Huawei Technologies Uganda has successfully concluded its Digital Skills Training program through the innovative DigiTruck initiative. This groundbreaking project has empowered over 6,000 Ugandans with essential digital skills, marking a significant milestone in bridging the digital divide across the country.
The DigiTruck, a mobile, solar-powered classroom container equipped with state-of-the-art technology, has been instrumental in delivering high-quality digital skills training to underserved communities. Launched on March 8, 2023, this flagship CSR project by Huawei Technologies Uganda aims to provide access to digital skills training, empowering small business owners and market vendors to thrive in the ever-changing digital landscape.
Key partnerships and impact
The success of the DigiTruck initiative is attributed to robust partnerships with key stakeholders, including the Ministry of ICT & National Guidance, the National ICT Innovation Hub, MTN Uganda Foundation, Centenary Technology Services (Cente-Tech), and the Uganda Institute of Information and Communications Technology (UICT). These collaborations have been instrumental in ensuring the delivery of high-quality training and maximizing the project’s reach.
At the graduation ceremony held on March 12 at the UICT National Innovation Hub, a total of 851 participants, comprising 493 men and 358 women, primarily market vendors, celebrated their achievement. This milestone underscores the project’s significant impact in empowering communities across Kampala, including the Kamwokya Community Centre, Kamwokya Market, Kamwokya Mosque, Kitintale Market, Port Bell Market, and Usafi Market.
Empowering communities through digital skills
The DigiTruck initiative has trained over 6,000 Ugandans across various regions, focusing on youth, women groups, and small business owners. By equipping these individuals with essential digital skills, Huawei is not only fostering innovation but also unlocking new economic opportunities for communities across the country. This aligns with Uganda’s broader vision of using ICT as a driver of national development.
Speaking at the ceremony, a Huawei Technologies Uganda emphasized the company’s commitment to digital transformation in Uganda.
Dr. Aminah Zawedde, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of ICT & National Guidance, highlighted that this initiative is a crucial step in implementing Uganda’s Digital Transformation Roadmap. “This digital skilling initiative represents the practical implementation of our digital vision. When we see market vendors using technology to increase their incomes, we’re witnessing a digital transformation that matters to ordinary Ugandans.”
The Ministry of ICT and National Guidance has announced plans to expand the Digital Skilling Program to other regions across Greater Kampala, Eastern, Western, Northern, and Central Uganda. With a target of training an additional 3,000 Ugandans by the end of the year, Huawei Technologies Uganda remains committed to supporting this nationwide digital literacy drive.
